Goal

To develop a set of sustainability indicators and metrics related to Canada’s agriculture and agrifood industries.

Project Summary

Alongside Pulse Canada and the Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS), more than 75 organizations spanning the agrifood sector have collaborated to create the National Index on Agri-Food Performance, including financial services, innovation organizations, environmental NGOs, and federal and provincial governments.

The partners are focused on showing how agrifood production and supply in Canada is economically, environmentally and socially sustainable. Additionally, they are striving to ensure that sustainability is communicated to both consumers and trade partners, helping build trust and improve Canada’s national agrifood brand.

Results and Impact

  • The National Index on Agri-Food Performance displayed the sustainable practices used in Canada's sector and identified sustainability impacts and opportunities.
  • Canada's first agrifood sustainability index created a suite of globally recognized indicators that meet the needs of Canada’s agrifood sector. The index will be used in export markets to affirm the sector's sustainability leadership to international customers.
  • Developed a series of reports to inform the index and policy implications.
  • Formally presented Canada's sustainability credentials for the agrifood and plant-based food and ingredients sectors—improving the country's global leadership in sustainability measurement, competitiveness in the global market, and ability to meet the growing worldwide demand for healthy, sustainable plant-based foods and ingredients.
