Goal

To launch a new facility that will result in the Canadian production of flavour-neutralized plant-based protein that will enable the consortium to partner with future customers to develop tailored ingredients for food products.

Project Summary

Project partners worked together to bring new plant-based protein ingredients to Canadian and international manufacturers, with a focus on improving the functionality of pulse-based proteins in high-value ingredients. Their work resulted in various new products being launched domestically and internationally.

This consortium and its partners will be launching a new facility that will result in the Canadian production of flavor-neutralized plant-based protein. The project will enable the consortium to partner with future customers to develop tailored ingredients for food products.

Results and Impact

  • Brought a novel technology from pilot scale to industrial scale.
  • Successfully deployed the novel technology through the global launch of several of its Ultra Performance products, with positive customer feedback and adoption. Using this novel technology, partners will continue to expand the product offerings in 2023-27.
  • IPBPS successfully launched six products, flour and high protein concentrates using yellow peas, lentils, faba beans and chickpeas, available for a limited range of applications.
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions through the increased utilization of nitrogen-fixing pulse crops.
  • Improved supply chains within North America through the use of value-added processing capacity close to producers.
  • Created new jobs in Saskatchewan, and expanded capabilities of existing employees in Ontario.
  • Produced products not available elsewhere due to initial applications of novel technology.
  • Collaborated directly and indirectly with other Protein Industries Canada members, including the Saskatchewan Food and Industry Development Centre and Federated Cooperatives, to create opportunities for new projects and innovation.
  • Established long-term strategic partnerships between IPBPS and SIIT, Belle Pulses as well as the Saskatchewan Food and Industry Development Centre.
  • Awarded Best Plant-Based Sustainability winner of The World Plant-Based Awards at the Plant Based World Expo in New York.
