Goal
Produce high-quality clean label plant-based protein ingredients using a unique, innovative process and then market those plant-based protein ingredients, via ingredient distributors, to food companies around the world.
Project Summary
The project partners will create an innovative proprietary process to produce high-quality and highly sought-after made-in-Canada soybean protein ingredients and soybean oil that comply with non-GM and organic labelling standards, and then market those plant-based protein ingredients, via ingredient distributors, to food companies around the world.
CPI-IPC will process the crops at a brand-new, first-of-its-kind facility in Canada. The plant-based extraction process eliminates the need for hexane. This novel technological process opens a whole new market opportunity to create a competitive advantage with a clean-label soybean protein.
With no Canadian processors but lots of Canadian Identity Preserved (IP) soybeans available, CPI-IPC is poised to capitalize on a Canadian commodity with a novel Canadian technology to meet the needs of a rapidly growing global market. Canadian food companies will also benefit from a local source of plant-based protein ingredients which currently must be imported. Commercialization will start with soybeans but will expand to hemp processing as well.
Semences Prograin will develop and test new non-GM soybean varieties optimized for Canada’s growing conditions, while DJ Hendrick International and Agrocorp Processing will assist in developing, testing and marketing the new end products to international markets.
This will add increased value across the Canadian agri-food value chain; farmers will receive premiums for growing specialty crops, and food manufacturers will benefit from a local source of plant-based protein ingredients that currently can only be imported.
Results and Impact
- CPI-IPC plans to build a soy processing commercial facility in Ontario within the next five years. This facility will serve domestic and international markets, add soy processing capacity to the Canadian industry (initially by 25,000MT raw soybean usage), and will create 40 new jobs.
- CPI-IPC refined their de-oiling method to be viable at commercial volume and attract investment.
- Synthesis Agri-Food Network strengthened its market knowledge and identified a new market opportunity, expanded its knowledge and connections in the plant-based protein space, and increased its understanding of IP strategies for food and ingredient manufacturing.
- This project resulted in greenhouse gas reduction through hexane reduction, supply chain improvement by adding supply to the global industry when the facility is running, traceability by utilizing the CIPRS system for non-GMO soybeans, and resulted in food product innovation with clean label soy products.
